Bandante is the brain child of George Vjestica, guitarist for Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds and recently gave us their third release to date in the form of an instrumental entitled ‘So This Is Now’.
Almost immediately, the tone is set by the introduction’s energetic and rhythmic guitars, before we are hit with the first taste of the chorus, lead by a strong and rather triumphant sounding horn section. This energy continues to evolve and expand into various soundscapes whilst maintaining a sense of identity and style. The screaming organs and harsh brass tones give a real sense of drama and excitement as the piece progresses and the use of dynamic choices work well to sustain our attention and engagement. It really does feel like the ‘call to arms’ that the artist intended it to be.
The track also has a great cinematic quality, again, as the artist intended. You can easily image this being used over a pivotal moment in a high tension action film or series. The track is well presented in its video collaboration with filmmaker Timothy Shepard – depicting a glitchy and fast moving montage of sociopolitical imagery. This is perhaps the best context to hear this piece in, as the rapid sequence of news headlines and provocative global issues displayed work very effectively alongside such powerful accompaniment.
